Cat Battles Beginner Guide: Controls, Abilities and Game Modes
Learn how Cat Battles works on Roblox: the ring-out goal, PC controls, the eight abilities, Classic and team modes, and simple tips for your first matches.
After reading this, you will know what you are trying to do in a Cat Battles match, which button does what on PC, how to pick a first ability, and how to avoid the mistakes that get new players knocked out in the first seconds. Cat Battles is a free Roblox arena brawler from Cute Malt Games, and you can find it on our Cat Battles page.
A note on sources: the official game description gives the goal, the controls, the ability names, the modes and the rewards. The extra tactical advice below comes from three fan-made wikis (not run by the developer or Roblox), and we only kept advice that at least two of them agree on. All details are as of October 2026 and may change when the game updates.
What is the goal in Cat Battles?
There is no health bar to worry about. You and the other cats fight inside a ring, and anyone pushed, slapped or tossed past the edge is out. The last cat standing wins the match. That means every decision comes back to one question: where am I standing compared with the edge?
Careful with search results: a different game called The Battle Cats exists, with stages and units. Its guides do not apply here. Check that the developer is Cute Malt Games before you join.
Cat Battles controls on PC
The official description lists five inputs. Learn them one at a time instead of pressing everything at once.
- Left Click: punch. Your basic close-range attack.
- Right Click: grab. Lets you hold another cat, which sets up a throw.
- F: kick.
- Shift: lift.
- Q: use your equipped ability.
The fan wikis describe grab plus lift as the main way to carry an opponent toward the boundary and toss them out. They also describe punch and kick as quick hits that push targets back. Exact timings, ranges and cooldowns are not published by the developer, so test them yourself. The wikis only list PC inputs, so if you play on another device, check the controls shown in the game.
Your first match, step by step
- Look at the ring before you fight. Note where the edge is and where the other cats are. One fan wiki calls rushing in without checking the edge the most common beginner mistake.
- Start in Classic mode. It is free-for-all, so you only need to watch yourself.
- Stay away from the edge, and be careful in the dead center too. Standing near the boundary gives you very little room if someone shoves you. The middle of the ring is where most cats clash, so a spot between the two, with space behind you, is a comfortable place to start.
- Let others fight first. In Classic, the wikis suggest waiting on the outside of a brawl and stepping in to finish a cat that has just been hit by someone else.
- Use Q on purpose. Press it to escape a bad spot or to start a fight on a cat that is exposed. Do not waste it in the first second.
- Check what happened after every round. Did you lose track of the edge? Forget your grab button? Pick one thing to fix next time.
Cat Battles abilities explained
The official description lists eight abilities: Dash, Pounce, Hiss, Anchor, Stomp, Catnip, Fluff Up and Hairball. You equip one and fire it with Q. The fan wikis we read list the same eight, but the developer's own page is the list to trust.
The developer does not publish what each one does, and the fan wikis describe them in their own words, so treat the notes below as general hints and read the description in the in-game menu for the real details.
- Dash: a burst of movement. Fan wikis suggest it as an easy first pick, since it helps both to reach a cat and to get away from the edge.
- Anchor: makes you harder to move, so it fits players who like to hold their ground.
- Stomp: hits the area around you, which is handy when several cats are close together.
- Pounce: a leap used to start a fight.
- Hairball: described as a ranged attack.
- Hiss, Catnip and Fluff Up: described as disruption, a combat boost and a defensive ability. The wikis disagree on the finer details, so test them yourself.
None of these is confirmed as the best. Try a different ability for a few matches and keep the one that matches how you like to play.
Cat Battles game modes
- Classic: free-for-all, every cat for itself.
- 2 Teams: two sides. Stay near your allies and go after the same target.
- 4 Teams: four sides. Avoid getting surrounded, and let the other teams hit each other before you step in.
In team modes, a cat that wanders off alone is the easiest one to eliminate, so stay with your group.
Coins, crates and furs
You earn coins in every bout, and crates give you furs (cat skins), sumo gear and emotes. The official description names furs such as Ginger, Tuxedo, Calico, Tiger, Snow Leopard, Gold, Crystal, Rainbow, Galaxy and Glitch. According to the fan wikis, furs are cosmetic, so a rare fur does not make you stronger. Spend your first coins on what you like, and keep practicing. Any purchase with Robux costs real money, so ask a parent or guardian first and remember that none of it is needed to play well.
Beginner checklist
- Know all five inputs without looking at the keys.
- Check the edge before every attack.
- Win your first Classic match by waiting for openings.
- Try at least three different Q abilities.
- Open your first crate and equip a new fur.
