Murder Mystery 2 Beginner Guide: Roles, Coins and First Steps

New to Murder Mystery 2? Learn the three roles, how coins work, which shop items help beginners most, and how to avoid trade scams.

Murder Mystery 2 is one of the longest-running games on Roblox, made by Nikilis. Each round is short, and each player gets a secret role. After reading this guide you will know what each role does, how to collect coins, and what to buy first. Details are as of October 2026.

How a round works

Before each round, players vote on the map in the lobby. Then everyone is randomly given one of three roles:

  • Innocent: you have no weapon. You hide from the Murderer and try to work out who they are.
  • Sheriff: you are the only player with a gun. You work with the Innocents to stop the Murderer.
  • Murderer: you try to eliminate everyone without being shot by the Sheriff.

The Murderer wins by eliminating everyone. The Sheriff and the Innocents win by stopping the Murderer. If the Murderer runs out of time, the Innocents win. If the Sheriff goes down, the gun drops on the floor, and another player can pick it up. The game also has collecting and trading of knives, which is why the shop and trading are such a big part of it.

What to do as an Innocent

Most of the time you will be an Innocent, so this is the role to learn first.

  • Learn the map. Know the hidden paths and the escape routes.
  • Avoid dead-end rooms and narrow corridors where you can get trapped.
  • Stay near players who act normally, but avoid big crowds.
  • Watch for players who move in strange ways, sit in corners, or never pick up coins.
  • When chased, change direction and use walls to break the line of sight. Open areas can help you dodge thrown knives.
  • Move a little at the start, then find a good hiding spot and stay for a short time before moving again. Moving too much makes it easier to run into the Murderer.

Coins: what they are and how to get them

Coins are spread around each map and you collect them while you play. You spend them in the lobby shop on emotes, objects, abilities and weapon cases. Some items cost a lot, so it takes time to save up. The best habit is to stay alive and keep walking around the map collecting coins instead of just hiding in one place. If the Murderer is camping near a dropped gun, going for coins is usually a better use of your time than trying to grab it.

Gems and spending

Gems are a second currency bought with Robux, and they make some items cheaper than coins. You never need to buy anything to play. Robux purchases cost real money, so ask a parent or guardian before buying anything, and do not feel pressure to spend.

Good first buys

TheGamer recommends these abilities and items for beginners:

  • X-Ray Vision: lets you see through walls, with a 30-second cooldown.
  • Speed Boost: a short burst of extra speed for escaping or chasing.
  • Invisibility: brief invisibility for getting close to a target.
  • Sit emote: useful for hiding in plain sight. The chat command "/e sit" no longer works, so you need the emote.

Best maps for beginners

TheGamer names Bank 2, Hotel, Workplace and Factory as maps with good mobility, meaning many escape routes. It says Mansion 2 and House 2 have limited escape routes, so be careful there. Map pools can change, so this may differ by the time you play.

Trading safely

Trading is popular, but scams happen. Do not accept "later" trade offers from people you do not know. Look up an item's rarity and value before you trade, and if an offer feels too good to be true, say no and walk away. Never share your account details with anyone.

Quick checklist for your first rounds

  • Vote for a map you know
  • Stay mobile but do not run in big groups
  • Collect coins when it is safe
  • Save for X-Ray Vision or Speed Boost first
  • Never trade on a promise to pay later
