Fisch Beginner Guide: What to Do First and Which Rod to Buy
Start Fisch the right way: how the fishing minigame works, which early rod to save for, what to buy first, and how to reach Roslit Bay.
After reading this you will know what to do in your first hour of Fisch: how to catch fish without getting frustrated, which rod to save for, and where to go once you have a little money. Prices in this game change with updates, so treat every number below as correct for October 2026 and double check it in the shop before you buy.
Your first minutes in Moosewood
You spawn in Moosewood. The free Flimsy Rod is your starter rod, and an NPC named Pierre stands near the docks and explains the basics. Talk to him once, then head to the pond and start fishing.
Here is how a catch works, based on the game's own description and the wiki:
- Hold the mouse button (or press and hold on mobile) to cast your bobber out.
- Wait for a bite. You can "shake" your rod to attract the fish faster. Destructoid reports that each shake click trims roughly half a second off the wait.
- When a fish bites, hold or click to move the white bar. Keep it on the fish line.
- When the progress bar at the bottom is full, the fish is yours.
You will lose a few fish at the start. That is normal, so keep trying. If you manage to keep the bar on the fish for the whole minigame you get a Perfect Catch, which gives a tiny bit of money (C$10) and 1.5 EXP. The EXP is the useful part.
Selling fish and making your first money
Walk to the Merchant in Moosewood and sell your catch. The game currency is called C$. How much a fish sells for depends on its rarity, its weight and any mutation it has. Keep fishing and selling until you can afford your first upgrade.
Look for an Angler NPC too. Anglers are found in the major locations and give quests that pay out money and EXP, so they are a good extra income while you are low level. Phineas in Moosewood also has a quest for catching fish with bait.
Which rod to buy first
The wiki walkthrough gives two cheap choices from the rod seller (Marc) in Moosewood: the Plastic Rod for 750 C$ and the Carbon Rod for 2,000 C$. The wiki says the Plastic Rod is a decent pick but there are better options, and it calls the Carbon Rod the best early-game rod. Destructoid agrees that the Carbon Rod is the one to get. Save for it instead of spending on small stuff.
Bait crates exist and cost 120 C$ each according to the wiki, but it says saving for rods matters more than buying bait at the very start.
Understand the rod stats
When you compare rods, these are the stats that matter (from the wiki):
- Lure Speed: how fast a fish bites after your bobber lands. Higher is less waiting.
- Luck: how likely you are to hook rarer fish.
- Control: how wide your white bar is. Wider is easier.
- Resilience: makes fish move less. Higher resilience means an easier fight, especially with low rarity fish.
Boat, GPS and the Fish Radar
At level 5 the Shipwright near the docks will talk to you, and you can buy your first boat, the Rowboat. A boat lets you reach other islands. After that the wiki suggests two helpful purchases:
- GPS: 100 C$. It shows your coordinates, which makes following guides much easier.
- Fish Radar: 8,000 C$. It points out areas with lots of fish.
Sunken Chests also spawn around the map. They usually pay a few hundred to a few thousand C$, which helps a lot early on. This is optional, so do not spend an hour chasing them.
Next goal: Roslit Bay
The wiki recommends Roslit Bay as your first big trip. You have two good paths there:
- Steady Rod, 7,000 C$: sold near the blacksmith Alfie. It has strong resilience, and a larger shake button, but a very slow lure speed (minus 60 percent), so fish take longer to bite. Both the wiki and Destructoid call it a solid mid-game rod for money.
- Magma Rod, free: the Orc in the volcano hidden passage will give it to you if you bring him a Pufferfish. The Fish Radar helps find Pufferfish near the Roslit lighthouse. It has basic stats but can fish in lava.
Also try the coral reef at Roslit Bay for Manta Rays, and the fountain pond at Forsaken Shores for Captain's Goldfish. Destructoid lists both as good early money spots.
Beginner checklist
- Talk to Pierre, then catch and sell fish in Moosewood.
- Save 2,000 C$ for the Carbon Rod.
- Reach level 5 and buy a Rowboat.
- Buy the GPS, then save for the Fish Radar.
- Sail to Roslit Bay, then choose the Steady Rod or the Orc's Magma Rod quest.
- Do Angler quests whenever you pass one.
