Dress To Impress Beginner Guide: How a Round Works

Learn how a Dress To Impress round works, from theme to runway to votes, plus stars, ranks, cash and the best way to practice.

Dress To Impress is a fashion game where you get a theme, build an outfit against the clock, and then other players vote on your look. After this guide you will know the steps of a round, what stars and cash do, and how to practice without any pressure.

How a round works

Every round follows the same order:

  1. Theme: a theme is revealed near the end of the lobby wait. A player with a Custom Theme Prop can pick the theme instead.
  2. Dressing: you build your outfit in the dressing room. One guide lists the timer as 360 seconds (six minutes) and another says about five minutes, so plan on roughly that long.
  3. Runway: everyone walks the runway and the other players vote.
  4. Podium and results: the top three appear on the podium, then a leaderboard shows the stars and cash everyone earned.

A normal server holds 13 players, according to one guide.

Voting, stars and ranks

Other players rate each look from 1 to 5 stars. Votes are anonymous, and the game averages them into your score. Stars are your long-term progress: they move you up through 14 ranks, which start at New Model and finish at Fashion Goddess.

There is no official scoring rubric, so what each star means comes from the community. In general, 1 star means off-theme, 3 stars means a decent on-theme outfit, and 5 stars means something outstanding. Votes also change from server to server, so do not worry if one lobby scores you lower than another.

What cash is for

Cash is separate from stars. You earn it by playing and from pickups around the map, and you can spend it on certain clothing, pose packs and walk packs. One guide says not to waste your styling time chasing pickups. Pick pieces that work for many themes instead.

The dressing room

The game has several areas to use. The standard dressing room has the free items. Lana's Salon, which is connected to it, is where you do hair, makeup and nails. Dressing booths hold your saved outfits and some special items. You can wear up to 18 items at once, or 24 with a gamepass (gamepasses cost real Robux, so ask a parent before buying).

A simple plan for your first rounds

One guide suggests splitting the clock like this:

  • First minute: decide how you will read the theme, the shape of the outfit and the main colors.
  • Middle of the round: build the base clothes, then layers, then shoes.
  • Late round: hair and makeup in the salon, since many players run out of time for this.
  • Last minute: accessories, props and a pose.

Pick one clear idea and keep it. A simple finished outfit usually beats an ambitious one that is not done.

Other ways to play

Besides the normal rounds there are two more modes worth knowing about. Freeplay Mode is for practice and is explained below. Style Showdown is a seven player elimination format with challenges, its own currency called Style Stars and a separate five rank ladder, so do not mix it up with the main star ranks. Get comfortable with normal rounds first.

Practice in Freeplay

Freeplay Mode has no theme and no timer, and it holds up to 17 players. Use it to learn where items are, how layering works and how to save looks. You do not need the VIP pass to learn the full round, so skip it if you are just starting.

Mistakes beginners make

  • Spending the whole round on one detail and leaving the outfit unfinished.
  • Forgetting hair and makeup until the timer is almost gone.
  • Changing the concept halfway through the round.
  • Picking random poses instead of two or three that suit the outfit.

Quick checklist

  • Match the theme first.
  • Finish hair, makeup and a pose.
  • Practice in Freeplay.
  • Check current codes on the official game channels for free items.
