Flee the Facility beginner guide: roles, computers, Freeze Pods and tips

Learn how a Flee the Facility round works: Survivor and Beast roles, hacking computers, Freeze Pods, exit doors, maps and simple tips for new players.

Flee the Facility is a 1 vs All horror game from A.W. Apps. After reading this guide you will know what each side has to do in a round, how hacking works, what Freeze Pods are and how to avoid the most common beginner mistakes.

How a round works

A round has up to five players. Most of them are Survivors, and one player is the Beast. The Survivors win by hacking computers and then leaving through an exit door. The Beast wins by catching the Survivors and freezing them.

Survivors get a 15 second head start before the Beast enters the map, and a round lasts up to 15 minutes. The game also runs on phones, tablets, PC and consoles, so you will meet players on every kind of device. Between rounds there is an intermission where everyone can vote for the next map in the lobby.

Playing as a Survivor

Your team has to hack a set number of computers. The number depends on how many players are in the round: it ranges from 3 to 5. When enough computers are done, the two exit doors switch on. Open one, walk through, and you escape back to the lobby.

How to hack a computer

  1. Stand in front of the keyboard of a glowing computer.
  2. Press E (on console, use the matching action button) to start the typing animation and a progress bar.
  3. Watch for skill checks while the bar fills and react in time.
  4. When the screen turns green, the computer is finished.

Up to three Survivors can hack the same computer. Hacking is much faster with more people, so working together saves time. Missing a skill check is costly: the computer shows an error, everybody in the server hears an alarm, and an icon shows where it happened. That includes the Beast, so a failed check is the quickest way to give your position away.

Rescuing friends

If the Beast catches a teammate, you can free them by standing next to their Freeze Pod and pressing the interact button. A rescued player does not get their lost health back, so a second capture is much more dangerous. Freeing someone is usually worth it, but check that the Beast is not hiding nearby first.

Playing as the Beast

The Beast plays in first person. The goal is to find a Survivor, hit them with the hammer so they are knocked down, and then bring them to a Freeze Pod. Before the Beast enters the map, it picks one of three powers (as listed by the wiki and by Bloxodes):

  • Runner: a short burst of speed, which is good for closing a gap on flat ground.
  • Stalker: hides the warning signals, so Survivors hear and see less of you coming.
  • Seer: shows Survivors who are out in the open.

The Beast carries a gemstone that glows, and nearby Survivors hear a heartbeat and chase music. If you are a Survivor, treat that sound as a signal to stop hacking and move.

How Freeze Pods work

A captured Survivor loses health inside the pod and freezes when it reaches zero. A frozen player is out for the round and goes back to the lobby, and that pod cannot be used again. There is an anti-camping rule: health only drains while the Beast is some distance away from the pod. Standing next to a pod does not freeze anyone, so a Beast should keep searching instead. The official rules also list camping and teaming among the actions that can lead to a ban, so play fair.

Maps

Facility_0, Airport and Homestead are three of the maps in rotation. Facility_0 was the first map and got a big revamp in September 2026. Private servers can also play older maps, according to the game description. There are many more, and the list changes over time.

Tips for beginners

  • Learn one or two landmarks on each map, plus a second way out of every area.
  • Do not run in straight lines. Weave around obstacles and close doors behind you.
  • Stop hacking when the heartbeat gets loud. You can come back to the computer later.
  • Split up the computers, but stay close enough to help a teammate.
  • Hack in pairs when the Beast is far away, because the time drops a lot.
  • As Beast, learn where the computers are and check them in turn instead of searching rooms at random.

Quick checklist

  • Hack 3 to 5 computers, depending on the player count.
  • Do not fail skill checks.
  • Rescue teammates when it is safe.
  • Leave through an open exit door.
