Backseat Rally Beginner Guide: Driver and Co-Driver Basics, Modes and Cars
Learn how Backseat Rally works as a driver or co-driver: the three play modes, the starter car, the start box, hosting races, CR and how cars unlock.
Backseat Rally is a Roblox rally game built around teamwork, and by the end of this guide you will know how to start your first stage, which job to pick, and how cars and CR work. The game launched in October 2026, and everything below is accurate as of October 2026. Details may change as the developer updates it.
The core idea is simple. One player drives, but the driver cannot see what is coming. The other player, the co-driver, sees the road and has to call the corners. The official game description says it plainly: your friend sees what is coming, you do not, and you drive on their calls alone. For a quick look at the game page, see Backseat Rally on our site.
How a run works: driver and co-driver
The driver handles acceleration, braking and steering. The co-driver reads the road and tells the driver what to do next. In practice that means short, clear calls: how sharp the next corner is, which way it turns, and when to slow down.
Good habits for the co-driver:
- Call corners early, not at the last second.
- Say the direction first, then how tight it is.
- Keep calls short so the driver can react.
Good habits for the driver:
- Trust the calls even when the road looks open.
- Lift off the throttle when you hear a tight corner coming.
- Stay on the road. Grass and bushes trigger a red DANGER warning and cost time.
Playing alone is fine. When you have no partner, a friend's avatar rides along and fills the AI co-driver seat. The fan-run Backseat Rally Wiki (an unofficial fan site, not made by the developer) also lists two-player co-op, an AI co-driver mode, and multiplayer sessions with friends or other players.
The three play modes
The main menu has PLAY, SHOP, MY GARAGE, CONTRACTS, STAGES and SETTINGS. PLAY opens three modes:
- Drive: you spawn in your own car and drive. This is the best place to learn how a car handles.
- Co-Drive: you sit beside a driver and call the corners. An "E Co-drive" prompt lets you take the passenger seat of a car.
- Free Roam: you walk around the service park on foot.
How to start your first stage
- Launch the game and open the menu.
- Choose PLAY, then DRIVE. New accounts start with the Orso 4.
- Pick your co-driver before you spawn: AI CO-DRIVER, LEAVE SEAT OPEN for another player on the server, or SPAWN + INVITE for a friend.
- Spawn and drive into the start box. If you overshoot, the game shows MISSED THE START BOX and the run will not begin until you park there.
- Wait for the countdown. The timer starts when it ends.
The first stage is Pine Forest in the Northern Woodland: 1.5 km, 19 curves, with a gold medal time of 1:12.0. Chevron arrows mark corners, and the HUD shows speed and distance. Damage carries over within a session, so a cracked windshield stays in your cockpit view. To pause, open MENU, choose PLAY, then CONTINUE.
Cars: the Orso 4 and how others unlock
The game has 7 cars in its official description, and the garage list names more models than the unlock table covers. The Orso 4 is the starter: a lifted rear-wheel-drive city car with 75 hp, 110 Nm of torque and a 149 km/h top speed. It is slow and likes to lean and slide, so drive smoothly.
Other cars unlock by driver level. Finishing stages earns XP, and a car unlocks on its own when you reach its level, with nothing to claim. AllThingsHow lists these levels:
- Freccia HF: level 3
- Rascal S: level 5
- Saetta HF: level 8
- Falke E3: level 8
- Kaze RS: level 10
To check what you own, open the menu, choose Play, then Change Car. You can also press C for My Garage. A car is yours once its level lock disappears. Some cars can also be bought instantly with Robux, but that costs real money and is never required, because cars also unlock through levels for free. If you are young, ask a parent before buying anything.
Hosting a race with the V key
Collisions between players are off in open driving. To set up a proper race, stand at the start line and press V to open the Race menu. You can set:
- Who can join: Everyone, Friends or Invite only
- Collisions: Off or On
- Entry fee: Free by default
- Racers: 2 to 6
- Class: Any, D, C, B, A, S or Stock
Confirm with HOST RACE. Faster cars open up higher classes in hosted races, so the car you earn by leveling matters here. You can also use RACE [Y] in the top bar to join or host.
CR, the in-game currency
CR is shown in the middle of the top bar. You earn it by completing stages and taking part in races. The Garage has CRATES, and duplicate drops convert to CR by rarity. Check the in-game shop for current prices, since they can change. You do not need to buy anything to progress.
A code is available right now: RELEASE gives 250 CR as of October 2026. You enter it in Settings, on the GAME tab. See our Backseat Rally codes page for the latest status.
